I’ve revised my previous 1-Octave and 2-Octave “Looper” scales, now called “Sirens”. These are my two favorite scales to use for strength and range training. You can hear samples and download either or both collections below.
Go straight to download area.
I use the 2-Octave version most often, but it could be too difficult for someone just getting started. Not only does it span an extra octave, but it takes 12 seconds to complete. This makes it great for training your breathing muscles.
Nearly all my vocal training is done with exercises known as Semi-Occluded Vocal Exercises (SOVE’s). For me, these are the best exercises to increase strength and range, eliminate breaks and tonal imbalances, and to improve the voice the fastest. The exercises I don’t most often are: Lip Trill, Humming and Straw Phonation in Water.
What do I mean by a “looping siren” scale? It’s a chromatic scale that climbs one half step at a time to its top, and then back down again. You voice a single connected tone for the entire phrase.
Then, instead of climbing a half-step for the next phrase, it stays where it is and loops again. Have a listen to the samples and scales. I’ll post some demonstration videos soon, too.
The 1-Octave chromatic scale mp3 now plays for one minute for each file. There are 14 files on total spanning four and a third octaves in total (i.e. from the lowest bass note to the highest coloratura soprano note).
NOTE: This sample repeats twice. The actual mp3 plays for 1 minute.
The 2-Octave Siren is more difficult than the 1-Octave version. Not only does it cover an extra octave, but it takes twice as long to get through. It goes for 12 seconds. Each mp3 will repeat the same 2-octave range for two minutes.
The mp3 files for each collection are bundled into a zip file. Use the download button to save the zip file to your device then expand the zip to reveal the collection.
Each file is carefully mp3 tagged so they will be easy to find and organize in your mp3 player. Sort them by track number to go from the lowest scale to the highest.
